Tips for managing your new puppy

Welcoming a puppy into your home is an exciting (and sometimes overwhelming!) adventure. Every interaction you have with your puppy shapes the way they grow, learn, and respond to the world. At Best Behaved Dogs, I believe in setting puppies up for success with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. The tips below will help guide you through your puppy’s early stages and build a strong foundation for a happy, well-adjusted adult dog.

Teaching Positive Behaviors

Puppies are always learning, which means every moment with them is an opportunity to guide their choices. Praise and reward your puppy each time they make a good decision, such as chewing on a toy instead of furniture or going potty in the right spot.

Supervise closely, and if you catch your puppy starting to make a poor choice, calmly interrupt and redirect them to something positive. Games that encourage focus, listening, and responding to you are wonderful for bonding. On the other hand, try to avoid confusing your puppy with games that encourage nipping, chasing hands, or other unwanted habits.

Before bringing your puppy home, decide where you want them to relieve themselves. The very first time you arrive home, take them to that spot. If they use it, celebrate with plenty of praise!

Inside your home, keep a close eye on your puppy. At the first sign they need to go, guide them outside immediately. The more frequently you can preempt them before accidents happen, the faster they’ll adopt appropriate potty habits. Pay attention to their natural schedule so you can anticipate when they’ll need a break. Consistency and patience are key here!

Socialization

Proper socialization is an important part of raising a puppy. When done thoughtfully, it helps your puppy grow into a confident, adaptable adult dog.

Following your veterinarian’s safety recommendations, gently introduce your puppy to a variety of sights, sounds, people, surfaces, and other friendly dogs. Keep experiences positive and low-pressure. The goal is to show your puppy the world is safe and fun.

Training isn’t just about teaching commands, it’s about giving your puppy structure, clarity, and an understanding of what you want. Early training helps your puppy learn how to live harmoniously in your home and in our community.

Basic skills like walking on leash, greeting people politely, and coming when called make life easier for both of you. More importantly, training strengthens your bond and gives your puppy the tools they need to succeed.

A crate can be an invaluable tool: it gives your puppy a safe place to rest when you can’t supervise and provides them with a cozy den of their own. Remember, the crate should never be used as punishment.

If crate training your puppy is the right choice for your family, help your puppy build positive associations by feeding meals in the crate, leaving special toys or treats inside, and making it a comfortable, calm space. When introduced properly, the crate becomes a secure retreat your puppy will enjoy.

puppy1Understanding Reactivity

Sometimes puppies show early signs of reactivity, such as cowering, growling, or guarding food and toys. These behaviors often intensify with age if not addressed. What starts as a soft growl in a young puppy can progress into more serious behavior as they mature.

If your puppy is showing signs of reactivity, don’t wait, reach out to a qualified professional trainer or behavior specialist right away. With guidance, you can address the issue early and set your puppy on a better path.

Puppy training tips from Best Behaved Dogs

Read what our clients have to say about Best Behaved Dogs

I first met Janet when I contacted her about training for my 1 year-old rescued miniature schnauzer, Mitia. Janet's individual training sessions were ideal; I preferred the one on one focus and being able to ask lots questions.

Janet's training techniques were so easy to follow and understand, and miraculously Mitia responded.

I was extremely pleased that I chose Janet. I expected the training sessions to be boring and frustrating but Janet made them fun for both Mitia and me.
